News: Alliance Home Entertainment TV-on-DVD Releases, April-June 2011

Yeah, I know.  My neglect of URBMN means these Alliance Home Entertainment titles, if not already out, are coming very soon.  Hey, a few of you are actually purchasing these titles through my links, so I must be doing something right…that or Americans are cross-border shopping.

The titles for April to June 2011, plus a selection for August:

Adventure Inc. | Complete Series (April 12, 2011)
Cook Like a Chef | Season 1 (May 17, 2011)
Degrassi: The Next Generation | Season 10, Part 1 (May 24, 2011)
First Wave | Season 1 (May 17, 2011)
The Hitchhiker | “The Complete Collection” (August 9, 2011)
Mysterious Island | Complete Series (June 14, 2011)
Starhunter | “Complete Series” (April 19, 2011)
TekWar | “Complete Series” (May 24, 2011)
The Ray Bradbury Theater | “The Complete Collection” (May 17, 2011)
Trailer Park Boys | “The Complete Collection” (June 14, 2011)

Starhunter was retooled as Starhunter 2300 for its second season.  Both seasons have been released on DVD in America, and both are “complete series.”  It’s stupid nomenclature.  I honestly thought Alliance had bled its 2000s industrial tank dry, but this, Adventure Inc. and First Wave have proven me wrong.

I’m skeptical about The Hitchhiker‘s “Complete Collection” listing, as that’s 85 episodes spanning two cable channels.  I hope Alliance will release the unedited, non-syndicated version of the show.  Given Alliance’s track record, it’s hard to say which version of The Hitchhiker will take the viewers places they don’t want to visit alone.

As for Cook Like a Chef…honestly, a cooking show season set?  That is the last thing I’d expect to see from Alliance.  Why is the company getting to this before CODCO?  Do cooking shows sell that well?

Finally, TekWar is a holdover from last year.  I really hope Alliance has the rights nailed down firmly this time.  As of this writing, the page still has the August 31, 2010 release date, so I’m not holding my breath.  It’s not like TekWar is a great-selling title, anyway.  I wonder why Alliance bothers with it.

Most of the stuff Alliance has been releasing is all niche stuff or 2nd-tier shows as I call them. Where the heck is Night Heat, a great show from the 80s that lasted 4 seasons which is good by Canadian standards?! I have written them several times and the answer is always the same- ‘no plans to release this title’. Why are they putting out all this crap and more importantly who is buying this stuff?!

  • NK, I’ve also been asking where Night Heat is, repeatedly.

People are buying some of the second-tier titles.  Since I’ve subscribed to’s Hot New Releases feed for television shows on DVD, Earth: Final Conflict, Lexx, The Outer Limits, Mutant X and Relic Hunter have been bestsellers at one time or another.   Earth: Final Conflict‘s second-season set even hit #1 on July 8, 2010.  First Wave‘s first-season set is currently hovering around #9 or #10 in the overall DVD bestsellers list…which is odd, as it’s not in the TV Shows list at all, but that’s for you.

I can only speculate on who’s buying the sets, though I know I’m answering a rhetorical question.  My guess is sci-fi fans, coupled with American fans of the above-mentioned shows not served by an American release.  That still doesn’t answer the question of why Alliance is avoiding titles like North of 60, CODCO, Night Heat and Da Vinci’s Inquest.  Hell, Alliance hasn’t even whipped out Neon Rider yet.

    C. Archer,

Alright, those shows you mentioned I can see doing well as Sci-fi fans are a hardcore bunch and if they like a show then they support it. I guess my comment was a bit harsh, lumping everything together. My crap comment was in reference to shows such as Adventure Inc, Amazon, White Fang, RoboCop and Mysterious Island- these are all ‘1 hit wonders’ as I refer to them . Why bother releasing stuff that only lasted one season which means no one watched them. Who the heck is in charge of making decisions on what to release at Alliance- they haven’t got a clue as far as I am concerned and should be replaced with someone more competent who will listen to consumers and release what people are demanding!

I second your notion about why those great shows haven’t been released?! (I would add Counterstrike to the list as well :-)) These are all good quality Canadian series that were popular with viewers and aired for many seasons. It should be a no brainer IMO as far as whether to release these shows on DVD. I would like to know why the refuse to release them, so far no comment from Alliance but I will keep pushing until they give me a reason. Unfortunately they appear to be our only hope (which sucks!) as I don’t see any other company having any interest in releasing these series on DVD?!

On another note, I noticed that you are the only one posting info about these DVD releases from Alliance (well except for me- I added the TV series info to the Alliance Films Wiki article and update it regularly), which is why I have bookmarked your site. 🙂

Just to follow up on my previous comments, here is the list of shows that Alliance has yet to release (according to they are the ones who have the rights to release these on DVD):

    Cold Squad (7 seasons)
    Counterstrike (3 seasons)
    Da Vinci’s Inquest (7 seasons)
    E.N.G. (5 seasons)
    Neon Rider (5 seasons)
    Night Heat (4 seasons)
    North of 60 (6 seasons)
    Power Play (2 seasons)
    Traders (5 seasons)

Here’s hoping that at least some of these finally get released on DVD.

I ran across this site while trying to find any information concerning the release of “First Wave” Season 2 on DVD – I live in Phoenix, AZ USA and had been waiting a long time for “First Wave” to become available so I bought Season 1 as soon as it was available and I’m half way through it. I would also love to see Counterstrike available on DVD as I have never even seen reruns of the series…

Does Alliance have somewhere that you can vote for shows to be released?

  • NK

    Hey Gary,

    Welcome aboard!

As I mentioned in an earlier comment above, this is the only place I have found on the net that has any info on the releases being put out by Alliance Films. I suggest you bookmark the site (as I have done) as our friend who runs the site will surely keep posting updates about new releases. Also, I have created a list of releases on the Alliance Films wiki article which I update whenever something new is released.

No word yet on First Wave S2 but I am sure Alliance will eventually release the remaining seasons of the series. Thus far all series they have put out have been released in their entirety (except for Zoey 101, the final season has yet to be released). In the beginning they were pumping out the releases one after another but recently I noticed things have slowed down a bit.

Counterstrike is on my wish list as well (along with Night Heat) but it appears they are a long shot to be released at this time.

As for the voting question, their is no mention at all about the TV series releases on the Alliance Films website. I have been bugging them about this for a while now, they replied to my most recent email and told me that they are working on updating the website to add in information about the TV series releases. I hope this is true but who knows with these corporations, they don’t seem to care about informing the public about the products they are putting out?! I think its rather pathetic that their website is not updated on a regular basis, especially in this day and age where everyone is online all the time. You would think they would want consumers to know what products they have for sale so they can buy them but it appears they can’t be bothered with updating their website (not sure why they have one then?!) I suggest you contact them ( and pass along your request for shows you want to see released. I have contacted them several times about Night Heat but it appears my requests are falling on deaf ears.

Another release coming down the pipe, announced today:

Once a Thief- The Complete Series- June 21

  • I was originally going to include that in a future post, as I tend to lump sets when five or more of them are released. Seriously, John Woo’s Once a Thief. Yikes.

  • NK

The Hitchhiker release has been delayed. It will now be released on Oct. 11.

On another note, it appears Alliance’s TV on DVD program might be coming to an end- no new releases have been announced (aside from The Hitchhiker). Too bad for First Wave fans, doesn’t appear they will release the remaining two season. Stupid me I actually thought Night Heat had a good chance of being released, guess that dream is over. 🙁

  • Yeah, I need to post a new update re: the releases. Been too long since the last post.

To be fair, the TV-on-DVD releases haven’t ended. The second half of Degrassi: The Next Generation‘s tenth season will come out September 20. The first season of Family Channel’s Henry’s World came out August 16. Party Dish and Uncorked: Italy will have DVD sets sometime in 2012. Most of the overall current Alliance fare is reissues of older releases.

I think Alliance’s buying Maple Pictures from Lionsgate is affecting its slate. I forget if Lionsgate has a decent non-American TV-on-DVD slate, but I can see Alliance reissuing MP-distributed product. I just don’t get why a couple of Food Network cooking shows, though.

  • NK

I did not know about the Maple Pictures acquisition?! Does this mean that the US shows that Lionsgate had acquired the rights to will now be released by Alliance?!

I wonder if this means they will abandon their releases of classic Canadian series?! I think that most of the series they have released to date have sold well, hopefully they don’t change their minds and continue to release more Canadian stuff. They have yet to release many good quality and very popular series such as Cold Squad, Da Vinci’s Inquest, North of 60 & Night Heat.

I’d just like to say a compliment instead of a complaint. I’m very grateful that Alliance has released First Wave FINALLY. I was shocked to see it, here we are deep into Bluray era and finally First Wave gets a DVD release. But I am happy about it as I thought it was a great show if a little inconsistent. I admit it had some poorer episodes but I don’t let that detract from the good ones. I hope they continue on releasing the next two seasons even if in my opinion the show went downhill. I know what caused that was a change in attitude toward the show based on needing more viewers to make it a success beyond the three season contract. This included things like adding a former porn star to the show for unnecessary sexual content. TV will never understand Sci-Fi, unfortunately it’s Sci-Fi that will never understand TV either. Ratings is all that matters if the general population are uninterested with Sci-Fi but will stop to watch when they see boobs then you will see boobs. Anyways I for one am happy that less popular Sci-Fi shows are being released. I also loved Star Hunter and purchased it too just wish it could’ve survived long enough for the story to unravel and come to some kind of even half closure. Thank you Alliance.
