TV Review | Ed the Sock’s This Movie Sucks! 2.1 – Jesse James Meets Frankenstein’s Daughter/The Master

Ed the Sock’s This Movie Sucks! (CHCH/CHEK/CJNT: second season premiered Saturday, September 25, 2010, midnight ET/PT) is one of those “if they find it, they find it” shows common to Canadian television.  Viewers and fans have most likely found new information about TMS! from this CHCH press release and, well, me.  Ed the Sock’s website is still “under construction,” while CHCH’s website is occupied with news and the odd full episode of Sportsline.

That’s a shame, since the second-season premiere of This Movie Sucks! is the best of the series.  There are still production problems – Ed the Sock points out that TMS!’ set is disintegrating in the season premiere.  The TMS! set looks slapped-together to begin with, so curtains don’t make a difference.

This Movie Sucks! has by now become a triad of Liana K, Ed the Sock and Ron Sparks.  Andrew Young’s on-screen role has been diminished by now, and he doesn’t even appear on TMS!‘ second-season premiere.  “Naked Dave” Ross, so named since he shows his bare torso off in many different costumes, does.

By now, This Movie Sucks! is comfortable in its riffing.  TMS! does an excellent takedown of Jesse James Meets Frankenstein’s Daughter.  Fart jokes still exist on this show, but TMS! by and large points out plot holes in Jesse James… Quick Draw McGraw can see.

Naked Dave even dresses up as Jesse James…‘s featured monster.  The monster has a bare torso, so that’s his excuse.

Longtime readers might remember my review of The Master six years ago.  TMS!‘ print of The Master looks exactly like Platinum Disc Corporation’s.  I’m not saying TMS! cribbed the print from a DVD, but it looks washed-out and soft.  CBS Corporation now owns the series, so I have no idea how The Master is public domain.

The Master is awesomely slapdash.  It plays fast and loose with ninja lore, which isn’t surprising for a show starring Lee Van Cleef.  1980s ninja archetype Shô Kosugi is wasted as chief antagonist Okasa.

Hell, in some scenes Kosugi is Van Cleef’s stunt double.  Don’t ask me how that works.  Ask Michael Sloan.  He created the show.  The man had a fetish for ass-kicking older men back then.

Timothy Van Patten, now an accomplished television director, mushmouths his way through lame dialogue as Max Keller.  Van Cleef’s doubles look visibly thinner than the actor himself.  It’s Kung Fu meets The A-Team, right down to the custom-painted van and miscasting of a western star.  NBC would air anything in the early 1980s.

The riffing of The Master is as good as Jesse James…‘ riffing.  Granted, it’s The Master.  Mystery Science Theater 3000 based two episodes around the Master Ninja pseudofeatures this show became.  The Master is a no-brainer to riff.

Also, This Movie Sucks! has Roninja.  Allegedly, this is a ronin whose parents have been killed by the Yakuza Gang.  To that end, the ronin becomes a ninja, fighting crime at night.  Ron Sparks may or may not be Roninja.  Look it up on Wikipedia.

I hope This Movie Sucks! comes into its own this “season.”  The series has pretty much been bashed into shape, much like MST3K was in the pre-Comedy Central days.  I can’t see TMS! “graduate” to a higher budget or Showcase any time soon, but I’ll be happy if the show doesn’t cycle the first six episodes like it has this summer.  There’s only so much one can take of Wild Women of Wongo.

  1. i just posted on this show on your other page, sorry, shoulda checked updated posts first. you should know googling this movie sucks brings up your page and nothing ‘official’ pages, that seems strange. i like your reviews and good to see somebody post about this show!

basically i said this episode was awesome, yes it is hands down the best of the series. the comments and movies were great, ron sparks really carried the jokes in this one. the master was so funny, not just for how bad it was and roninja showed up but anyone notice the master was like 94 years old? as you say his stunt doubles look nothing like him he can barely walk on his own! the shot where he is climbing the building is priceless.

i like the groups of ed/liana/ron, a lot don’t seem to like liana but i do. ed is ed, liana fights with ed, and ron is so funny as a sidekick. don’t know what it is every time he talks i find myself smile, the part describing how his parents were killed by the yakuza with the drawing then he just disappears was great.

jesse james was not so good for a movie but the comments were still great, that is what i wanted most from this show was for that to get better and this show was almost near perfect imho.

i didn’t think andrew was bad. naked dave was good even though when he was dead he laughed at the end but can’t blame that was funny.

thanks for the info re:mystery science theater i’ll have to check out their take on the master!

funny picture:the master teaching the student to walk on the clothes line, so obvious a stunt double!

  2. p.s. just read your 6 years old review of the master, great stuff!

  3. Weirdly, Lee Van Cleef was 58 when The Master was being produced, and 59 when it debuted January 20, 1984 on NBC. He wasn’t as old as he looked on the show.

Weirdly enough, there was no Wikipedia article on Roninja a few hours before I published the show review (recap?) Now there is. I should note that I didn’t create the page.

    Comment by C. Archer — September 27, 2010 @ 11:45 pm

  4. There are still problems with the show, the stuff outside looked all blue and fuzzy. The sound is better. The jokes and movies are way better than when they started. Ron Sparks did stand out, he was hilarious and Roninja was the definite hilight of the show. The Manster and The Killer Shrews/Crane, Tiger and Snake were great but Jesse James/The Master is still the best episode by a country mile. A show with Ed, Sparks and Liana K should be on CBC or something, maybe they wouldn’t have fuzzy video etc.

  7. Jesse James/Master was the best episode so far, I loved it!

I 100% agree about Roninja. Been a fan of Ron since seeing him on Video On Trial and always been a fan of Ed and Red!

It’s a great show and I look forward to tomorrow’s hopefully new episode :)

  8. I received an e-mail from Channel Zero’s Sonya Davidson today. New episodes will appear every Saturday, and this starts with the September 25 episode.

I’m taking the “believe it when I see it” approach, obviously, but that’s the official word right now.

  9. The episode with “The Master” and “J. James” was really funny. This week’s episode with the Mexican movie special wasn’t quite as funny but it was still great. I liked the new look of things. Did anyone else have the voices not matching up with the lip movements? The best parts were the foil robot, Roninja, I loved that Lake Eerie Peter was the exact same thing the next week. It’s always fun to see Ed dress up his sombrero was so cute ;) I wanted to see the Mummy fight the Robot too bad they didn’t actually fight my bet was on the mummy haha. I didn’t like the movies in the Mexican one as good they were hard to follow and made no sense. New episodes every week sounds great! I have had enough watchings of Star Man for a life time. Not that it was bad I just got tired of it.

  10. I want to see Roninja beat the hell out of Lee Van Cleef… the truck stop! Hilarious work mr. Sparks

  12. Anyone know where a listing would be saying what movies are coming up next week and beyond?

    Comment by Chris — October 5, 2010 @ 1:30 am

  13. Seriously why is there no web page for this show?

    Comment by Chris — October 5, 2010 @ 11:24 am

  14. Is this the only page talking about this show? CHCH doesn’t have a page for it. I was also looking.

Anyway I also think the last couple of shows were superior to the other shows they have done. I didn’t like Geekorama either but Jesse James/The Master was amazing- I loved the scene in Jesse James where the outlaw runs out in the street and starts shooting in the air then just gets shot right away lol. The Master will go down in history as the greatest grampa ninja ever and for introducing the world to roninja who I insist will be a legend among crime fighting ninjas and ronins as well.

I can’t wait to see this week’s show they have definitely figured out the best way to make it work. I love the commentary and the movies have been great.

Here’s hopin’ they don’t do reruns for a while again.

  19. note to chch– take the geekorama tape, burnt it, take the ashes, disolve them in acid, throw into a volcano never to be seen from or spoken about again. that sucked my dead cat’s ass.

    Comment by robinson — October 13, 2010 @ 1:48 pm

  20. Tonight’s episode was new thankfully. Laser Mission with Brandon Lee (whuh?) and Ernest Borgnine. Lots of cleavage and terrible acting, the movie was great. The Ed the Sock stuff looked fantastic but HOW CAN THEY STILL HAVE AUDIO PROBLEMS WITH NOT MATCHING UP SOUND WITH LIPS!!!!! ARGH!!!!! They did a telethon and I really liked it. The guests answered phones and performed with them they had dancing, clown comedy, “trained” birds, a guy with an accordion, and at the end Ed did the banana boat song because they reached their goal for raising money. Ed was such a “good” singer haha that song he did was weird just the kind of thing I like to see on TV. The movie was great, maybe the best (worst) movie they have had so far but the commentary was not as good because they just had Ed and Liana, no Ron even though he was in the show. Also surprised Ron didn’t do stand up comedy or anything. He wasn’t as good as in the Roninja episode but was still funny. The best telethon performer was Mullet a clown who did stand up I thought it was funny, way too much laugh track though and they for sure need to fix their audio troubles. Still this was one of the best episodes, Liana looked good and Ed had a pretty cool tuxedo. The movie sucked for sure, Laser Mission with the bad guy taking a scientist because the scientist could use the world’s largest diamond and a laser to make a nuclear bomb yes it was that stupid. Very funny movie, very good telethon.

    Comment by laser mission — October 17, 2010 @ 2:19 am

  21. Re Laser Mission:

Ed and Liana K may have touched on the audio/video problems in a few of the host segments. They pointed out how the equipment they use is relatively old and unsophisticated. I think I even saw an amplifier with the 1980s CHCH logo on it.

I wonder who pays for TMS!: Steven Kerzner, or Channel Zero. If it’s Channel Zero, the news segments and Sportsline must be getting more money. I mean, Sportsline has modern graphics and doesn’t look like a scrim.

    Comment by C. Archer — October 17, 2010 @ 10:00 am

  22. I saw that too but they had audio problems in a lot of episodes so far it is annoying! At leat they aren’t still doing 6 weeks of reruns in a row any more, so far. The new episodes have been wicked. I love it when it’s just Ed/Liana/Ron but I liked watching all the telethon guests/performers too it was fun. The picture looked way better last night than in old episodes too.

    Comment by laser mission — October 17, 2010 @ 2:21 pm

  23. Laser Mission was a great movie but the comments could have been more than just two hours of “her boobs are big and that action couldn’t happen in real life”. The telethon was great, I also found it weird Ron didn’t do anything except maybe if his talent was to stand up during Ed’s song and doing the interviews of the other people maybe meant he couldn’t do both. That audio problem only happened one time during the clown who I thought was funny but they wrecked it with the awful laugh track. The picture was great but that has been good for the last several weeks at least for the new episodes. The only thing I have not likes so far was the first episode and the E3 episode which both weren’t terrible they just were the only ones I watched then felt maybe I would have been better off watching another channel. I look forward to new ones!

    Comment by SM — October 21, 2010 @ 5:38 pm

  24. The Master/Jesse James was the best episode hands down with great riffing, two great movies full of stupid plot holes etc, The Master probably can not be beat for full effect over all seeing as it was a 80 year old ninja with the stupidest eighties clichay story elements, not to mention the hilarious roninja.

    Comment by Claire M. — October 21, 2010 @ 6:14 pm

  25. i love the show, i love ron and ed and liana!

    Comment by carter — October 22, 2010 @ 2:00 pm

  26. I love that episode but still it’s being rerun again after only 3 wks? The Master is the best, liked Jesse James Meets Frankenstein etc, commentary and the roninja good, but still I want more new eps. The Telethon to raise money to fight the cheap bastards was good but the movie was boring.

    Comment by Regal Marc — October 24, 2010 @ 8:55 am

  27. the show is good but not great. i agree that jesse james and the master was the best so far. i missed the telethon but that sound like a good one too.

  31. It’s confirmed! The last episode had his voice during the movie, maybe he is out of town doing a stand up tour and called in to do voice recording because it was just his voice he was not physically there.

Good movie and good episode but all the giantess stuff was creepy and the guy making it disturbed me.

    Best parts of the show….

Ed describing how Yongary is taking a crap like his dog.
Liana “you would think the kid would be more interested in looking for a wet nap”
All the parts where the kid runs around through the sewer making sure to run threw the sewage instead of on the dry platforms, and where he knew how to operate stuff at the factory by himself.
Ron “I’m not in this one, I’m in the hospital”
Ed “I didn’t mean to insult the art of your giantess video”
The part where Yongary inhaled all the fire, the part where Yongary had the ability to shoot a lazer out of his horn.

  32. I found this site by looking for This Movie Sucks and I like your reviews I have read here so far it is a cool site for looking at Canadian TV show reviews. I just am commenting here to say I love the show as a long time fan of Ron Sparks and Ed and Red I have seen him do standup comedy and who has not grown up watching Ed and Red on TV I missed them after they were gone from their old show. It is different from the old show and I worried it would just be a Mystery Science Theater rip off but it is a great show. Too bad there’s apparently no damn web site for it itself? Great site here though man.

    “It’s Seal!”

“At Least he still has his good looks”

“The phone didn’t work so I will just go into the house in case the other phone’s work”

“I will just wander in high heels”

“Look to your right look right look right look right to see the bad guy!”

“Why do they drive on the other side like in England but on the right side of the road”

“Bleach blonds and airplanes have in common, black boxes”

    “Fix our eyes!”

“If she wasn’t wearing underwear he would not have stoped looking up her skirt”

“Earthquakes are just one place not across the entire world”

“This is the same plate tree”

Hahaha I have this one on tape I will start taping them all maybe we can put them up on youtube or something, there is a 15 min clip limit now but if we break it up in parts we can post the episodes, only if ok with Ed the sock obviously.

  48. Actually, TMS! bookended Manos: The Hands of Fate with The Impossible Kid.

As for new episodes, I don’t know what’s going on. As I understand the situation, and I honestly don’t understand it that well, new TMS! episodes are contingent on new money from Channel Zero, since Kerzner Mediarts Entertainment doesn’t pay for TMS!‘ airtime. Ever wonder why The Being Frank Show‘s a going concern, yet TMS! has a stop-go run? Frank D’Angelo’s paying for his airtime on CHCH.

I’ve even asked Ron Sparks about the CHCH situation. The show hasn’t been cancelled, but it’s in this weird stasis right now.

    Comment by C. Archer — January 25, 2011 @ 11:40 pm

  49. then ask ron sparks when new episodes will be on please! not trying to be rude just disapointing when it is a rerun every week they say the show costs nothing to make every week so what is the problem? tell him to grab the puppet and get back on tv :-)

    Comment by dominichasatv — January 27, 2011 @ 6:08 pm

  50. p.s. being frank obviously is him just paying for the tv time cause every single ad in the show is him selling his own energy drink and pasta sauce etc. that show is so bad, chch should be embarassed and put this movie sucks on more, new ones.

  51. Any updates on this show? It’s real frustrating that there is no info to be found on it on the net. New shows coming or what? Yes they make garbage like Being Frank and this great show they can’t even put on the web page? CHCH can be so stupid sometimes.

    Comment by pal robinson — February 13, 2011 @ 5:03 pm

  52. I found the following message on a YouTube video comment:

“To those who aren’t on facebook, Ed said that? he asked CHCH to stop airing reruns until new episodes return in the spring. These new episodes will air for one hour because he said that two hours were killing them. Reruns will still air on the other channels.”

Wondering if it was true, I sent an email to the Sock King himself. His responses was as follows:

“Yes, it’s true. We’re going to do 6 more. After that, we will re-assess. We have moved “I Hate Hollywood” to a fall launch so we can shoot it in LA, and there will be some big website news soon as well.”

So we can expect more Ed in the not too distant future!

“Currently producing more episodes of my TV series with Liana K, This Movie Sucks, and planning a re-launch of our website with a crapload of classic video content and new material (eventually).”

So the new episodes are still coming, but still no update as to when. But considering it was confirmed to be shown in the “spring”, it can not be that much longer, unless his campaign for PM slows him down a bit.
