REVIEW FOR JANUARY 24?, 2004?!

FIFTY FOOT COMBO
"JENNIFER JENNINGS" SINGLE
DRUNKABILLY, 2003

I'm not reviewing the label sampler that came with the single.  That's a review in itself and I just can't be all wordy yet about bands that aren't even in my "field."  As a famous...well, somebody famous, I'm not sure who - said, "Save the drama for yo mama!"  No, I'm not supposed to pretend to be black.  See, that would compromise my Aryan heritage and I've just finished covering myself with swastika tattoos.  Screw it, I'm a sellout.  Brand me an International World Jew if you must.

Alright, that's enough filler.  Fifty Foot Combo is a surf band from Belgium in the vein of, I dunno, other surf punk acts.  Screw me, the only other band I've heard in this genre is Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited.  For a surf punk act Fifty Foot Combo is very good.  The sound the band plays is this retro sound but with much more of an aggressive bent than SSSU.  Essentially, these are instrumentals that have this TV theme bent to them.  For what the songs are they're very tightly played and energetic, and they're credible enough to be notable in the surf scene.  There's not much else I can say about "Jennifer Jennings," really.  Surf bands are pretty much cut from the same cloth (Farfisa organ, bongos, clean guitars etc.) but Fifty Foot Combo is a decent band for the genre the band is in.  This'll appeal to a select group but I'm sure the group'll like it.  It's not Brian Setzer, at least.

The video that came with the CD, though, is surprisingly well done.  To be honest, it's one of the best videos I've seen in a few years.  Not that what I'm saying means much, given my aversion to music video television as a whole.  I don't care how many times you say it, you can't force me to think 50 Cent is cool just because he's street and shit.  Still, the "Jennifer Jennings" video is well-produced and has a real chance to appear on one of those music television dealies...you know, if MTV and its competitors weren't all gay with this narrowcasting and trying to sub-brand their sub-brands.  The "Jennifer Jennings" video will never appear outside Europe, probably, but I honestly prefer this to Two and a Half Men.  I'm still stymied as to how a van can crash into thin air, though.  At least show a tree in front of it first.

Anyway, I've said enough.  Time to perfect my übermensch body and listen to some Skrewdriver.  Oh, and go to the Snoop Dogg concert.  He's the shiznit, boyee.
